Saturday there was an open house at the Gertrude Hawk factory and I thought "Great! Awesome! Let's go make an outing and go! Free chocolates and all that!" Sounds like a wonderful idea, doesn't it. Let's just say it wasn't a unique idea. We get there and the line to get in was up the drive and around the corner (not to mention the line of cars to find a parking spot). While we got a great parking spot, everyone refused to get out of the car. "The line's too long" "I don't want to wait" "We'll never get in". Sigh. "Please" I plead to ears that aren't listening. "I want to go" But, alas, I was outvoted and we ended up leaving.
I really didn't want to go back home ~ I knew I couldn't squander the opportunity to actually do something since we were all in the car so we rode over to McDade Park and just in time hopped on a rail car to take the coal mine tour.
Liam had gone on a school trip about 2 weeks ago there and wanted us to go see it as well. It was really very interesting - and I would recommend it if you ever find yourself in the area.
The weather's been beautiful the last few weeks (minus a couple of days of constant drizzle that we had last week) and we should get one more "good" day before the tide turns. I'm glad we were able to spend Saturday doing something ~ even if it wasn't what I had planned.

The kids look like they're really enjoying being there. We need to figure out a meet up next year.

We did have a good time. :)
Yes ... we're so close now we should figure out when we can meet up!

I remember running a cross country race through McDade park when I was in high school.
I have taken that tour but I took the one at Pioneer Tunnel. It scared the bejesus out of me. Now I know why my grandfather opted to be on relief instead of continuing to work in the mines.

Paula ... I give those miners a lot of credit ... that was such a hard life.
