You can sure feel the fall in the air around here ... tonight they're even promising a few snow flurries. Brrrr.... but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy Halloween. This started out innocently enough ...
Does that make me a bad cook for using packaged cake mix and frosting? Liam and I were in Target last week, he saw these, and *poof* his little 10 year old brain was in action wanting to make it. Not that there's not enough sugar around this time of year (no, I haven't bought my candy yet, have you?), but I'm a softie at heart and we came home with it.
There's been a plethora of tie dye cakes around the blogging scene for quite a while and I thought that would be the perfect way to make these special. Colors? That's easy ... black, orange, purple, and white.
Since it was a "funfetti" cake mix, I opted to add the extra sprinkles into the white -- just to flair it up a bit. Spooning it into the cupcake liners was a little tedious, but I think I got the right amount of each color in each muffin cup. They were over the "2/3" mark, so I only got 15 out of the batch but that's okay ... isn't more better?
About 18 minutes later, cupcakes, all risen and beautiful ...
Frosting them was more a job for Adrienne and Liam so they piped on the frosting and sprinkled them with sprinkles. They came out looking great!
but what really makes them special is when you cut (or bite) into them ...
I LOVE them :) Makes me almost forget they have canned frosting on them. (Truth is I really don't mind using the box cake mix, but the canned frosting just tastes, um, ick, to me. Trust me, that's saying a lot since I could be very happy just eating the frosting and leaving the cake most of the time.)
All in all I'd say if you need to bring cupcakes to an event this Halloween ... try these ... they'll get you noticed!

Believe it or not I hadn't see the tye dye idea before. Can't wait to give it a try myself. What did you use to color the batter? food coloring or icing gel color?

Oooh, I can't wait to see what you come up with, Melanie!
I used the gel ... only because that's what I had in the house. I'm sure either would be fine though.
