Today we took the kids to the corn maze in Glendale - I think it would have been much better had it been cooler (it was close to 80 out there) but we had a good time nonetheless. No, we didn't get lost, but it was fun pretending. :-)
I love to think about where we should go on vacation in the next few years and think I've found something I definately want to do when Liam gets a little older ... Wild Play Parks. I was looking online this morning for bungee jumping places (don't ask...) and came across their link. It looks like *so* much fun ... especially if we could get another family to come with us (any takers?) :-)
This was the scene in Disneyland today - Christmas down one side of Main Street. We wondered "What the heck??" but later found out that they're getting ready to film the Holiday commercials so that's why the decorations. Now, granted, there was TONS of Halloween stuff for sale, but at least I didn't see any more Christmas yet. (August is a wee bit early don't you think?)
So, what did we do today? We got to ride the new Pirates ride after a long, long, long wait in line ... they did a great job of renovating the ride and adding Jack Sparrow touches. I can't wait to ride it again to see even more of what I missed. I also got to finally see the changes to the attic of the Haunted Mansion - love the touches they added for the bride. Liam decided we needed to go on the Grizzly River Run so of course I got really wet - Adrienne got SOAKED but she borrowed our friend's rain poncho so she was dry when we got off. Liam was the one that WANTED to get soaked and he barely got a drop on him (figures). We also did Buzz Lightyear, Autopia, the Canoes, and the Challenge Trail. Afterwards, we stopped at Flamingo's (a local Mexican restaurant) and had dinner. Now the kids are in bed exhausted and ready for another day tomorrow.
I downloaded some of my camera's photos to my friend's computer tonight so I decided to laboriously send some over here for this blog. Hope you enjoy them. :)
This first one is the photo from last night of the Brussels Sprouts with Kaiserfleisch & Red Onion. Granted, I didn't have any Kaiserfleisch so I used Pancetta, but doesn't it look delicious? This is definately something that I'm going to have to make again SEVERAL times at home. Love, love, love the taste of it. I could probably eat it for lunch too. YUM!
Now, next photo is what we had for lunch today. I made salmon croquettes - just mixed 2 cans of canned salmon with 2 eggs, about 1/4 cup of finely diced red onion, and about 10 Club crackers crushed up fine. Added a little salt and pepper and pan fried small patties of them in a little non stick cooking spray until they were golden on each side. With that I also made up some chicken salad (just canned chicken, reduced fat mayo, chopped dill pickles, salt and pepper), put out the leftover Macaroni Salad from last night as well as some salad greens and fresh fruit. Drizzed it all with some fat free bleu cheese dressing and we were good to go. We had a couple of ladies over stamping today so it was a good break while we did some cards (sorry, no cards to show you right now).
After all that stamping came dinner ... we opted for Eng's Chinese - something we always get when we come visit here in San Juan Capistrano. It's an unassuming strip mall restaurant with buffet style warmers but the food is great. This is what was leftover after Travis got a hold of the food - just a few Orange Chicken pieces and some rice (and a noodle or two).
Finally, after dinner we digested for a few minutes and then went to a great little park to run around and play frisbee. This has become the kids newest outdoor love - I'm going to have to take them when we get back to Vegas and do an evening park event a couple of times until it cools down. 115 is way too hot to even think of going out to play frisbee. Travis especially had a good time - it's nice to see him enjoying himself. :)
News on my van - I called them today shortly before 3pm and amazingly enough they said it was just finished. Nothing major but the a/c needed to be recharged. So,I went down, paid for it and went on my merry way again. Yeah!
Tomorrow we're planning on heading over to Disneyland so hopefully I'll get a post or two on our adventures there. (New Pirates ride! New Haunted Mansion!)
Sorry, no photos until we get home. Too bad too, because I have a couple of good ones from tonight's dinner. We got roast chicken from Albertsons and used that as the basis of dinner. Cut it into pieces and had with it mashed potatoes (not real exciting, but Liam likes it), corn (again, not very exciting, but edible), a Weight Watchers recipe for Macaroni Salad, and Brussels Sprouts with Kaiserfleisch & Red Onion - a recipe I found for this past Weekends Herb Blogging (#45). Oh yeah, and The Best Banana Pudding.
Now for the reviews - Macaroni Salad is one I've made before and it's good. You can definately tell it's in the "diet" category, though. Something about whole wheat pasta and fat free mayo really get to you sometimes. Brussels Sprouts with Kaiserfleisch & Red Onion was fantastic, out of this world yummy. Now I like Brussels Sprouts anyway, but I got 2 confessed Brussels Sprouts haters to eat it. Too bad you can't see the photo I took of it - may make you want to make it yourself! The Best Banana Pudding was probably not the "best" banana pudding we've ever had, but it was good. Very sweet and creamy - not hard to make at all and full of bananas. I think I need to remember next time to buy the sugar free/fat free version of the puddings - I think it would cut down on the sweetness. The cute part was that we found miniature 'Nilla wafers - perfect size!
Now the bad part of the day - we were driving up to the Container Store and my van's air conditioning went out! UGH! At least we're in Southern California at this point so it wasn't too miserable driving around with no A/C. I took it over to Dodge this afternoon and while they can't guarantee they'll even look at it tomorrow, they'll try. I told them I needed to be back in Vegas by Thursday so let's see if they can fix it by then. Hopefully there's nothing else wrong with it as well. YUCK! The good part is that we are staying with our friends so they don't mind if we are stuck here a day or so extra (THANK YOU!) I did tell Don though that if we are still here on Thursday we're going to Disneyland - so far I've been good and resisted the urge (big big urge) to go get new annual passes but I can't be held responsible for what happens if we're stranded here longer than we're supposed to be. :-)
What a pain in the %^@#* it is to try to get photos over here to this computer - not sure if I'll do it again before the trip is up, but thought I'd post the ones that did make it over...
This first one is from yesterday - near my friends' house is a nice open space where we can play frisbee... fun, fun!
This is lunch from Jon's today - it's their "special" - fried fish, shrimp and scallops. I wasn't crazy about the shrimp (reminded me of a shrimp corn dog type thing - way too much batter), but the fish was outstanding (as usual).
Walking along the docks, there was this interesting plant - not sure what it is, but I liked it so I took a picture.
The kids were amazed at all the crabs we saw in the water - I probably shot 10 pictures and finally got this one of one out of the water. Much clearer to see (and more colorful).
Last one... Liam loved walking sideways across the embankment. Up on top is a road - the walkway winds around it and under it for safe pedestrian traffic.
Well, I was going to try to post a couple of pictures but it looks like my laptop's SD card reader is NOT WORKING!!! I'll have to figure out a different way to get some photos over here (maybe email from another computer) and we'll just have to go with a text description for now. Too bad I'm such a lousy writer or someone might actually enjoy this post. :-)
So far since Thursday we've ... [Friday] gone up to South Coast plaza to shop (Got a couple of nice things at the Container Store to help me organize my office), eat (Rainforest Cafe) and bought Don his belated birthday present (Caller ID Globe). [Saturday] went to Michael's to pick up some Modge Podge to seal/create Travis' Magic the Gathering new binder I'm making for him (pictures to follow I promise!), drove to the San Clemente pier and couldn't find parking so we drove up to another beach area that I'm not sure of the name of right now to stand by the water to watch the surf for a while. Liam and I had fun standing "just" far enough away that the surf wouldn't hit us (and moving back as it ever increasingly inched forward). Then came back to the house and while my friend stamped, I put together Travis' Magic binder (came out great if I may brag a bit!)
Today being Sunday, we have a few things planned ... Don needs to drive back home today (did I fail to mention he drove up after work on Friday to join us in our fun and merriment for a while? I'm glad he did :-) ) and we're going to John's for fish & chips (YUM!) for lunch. Also head out to walk around Dana Point for a while and see some of the cool boats. HOPEFULLY I'll get some photos over to this computer and can have some photos with my next post.
WooHoo! The kids and I are driving down to California to visit our friends ... I'm so excited to see them AND get a short break before school starts up again (wah! where did summer go?)
I'll try my best to update the blog from there ... and Melanie, I was going to call you but I knew you were leaving SD Saturday and didn't think we could get down there to meet up with you before then. See you later in the month though! :-)
